Yeah, if he did it was probably a figure of speech or a lack of continuity, in that the creators didnt seam together his previous statement once they reached the 2x23 flashback episode?..because there was quite a gap between those episodes.
What they need to do is hire some of the lost fans as were so observant that we would ensure that continuity is always on top form

It seems a silly error though...
But as with usual things with lost - we haven't been shown what happened; it's just word of mouth. This kind of reminds me of Dani's 2 stories:
How "It killed them all" and
How she killed them all
We've not seen what's happened yet so it could still be either or neither! Same thing could happen with Kelvin, I suppose!
